Ahh, John McCain and George W. Bush. Where does one man end and the other man begin? If you're left feeling confused as to whether McCain's a party-line busting rebel with his own maverick ideas or a genuflecting toadie of the current regime for whom the only question is whether George W. Bush is the greatest president or the greatest president EVER IN LIFE!...you are not alone. McCain's own surrogates can't seem to make up their mind.

Mitt Romney, the robot who ran for President powered only by silver medals and fraud, has been auditioning to be a great leaden weight around McCain's neck - or, as Romney puts it, "vice-president." So he took up McCain's cause today on Wolf Blitzer's Late Edition emphatically denying that McCain was going to be a continuation of the Bush doctrine: "Well I think you're going to hear that time and again, Wolf, throughout the campaign season. And I just don't think it's going to stick."

Of course, by "time and again," Romney might have been referring to "just moments ago." Roy Blunt, another McCain surrogate, when asked by Blitzer if the McCain candidacy represented a "third Bush term," answered in the affirmative: "It would be. I think it would be. And I think that's a good thing."

And here's the essential mashup of the astounding core competencies and breathtaking message discpline of the McCainiacs, courtesy of ThinkProgress.

Financial Superstar Hits A Rough Patch Rate

FOR 15 years through 2005, Bill Miller, one of the country's most closely watched and widely worshiped stockpickers, made investments that handily beat stock market averages. But for the last two years, the market has handily pulverized him.

As the chairman of Legg Mason Capital Management, Mr. Miller helps oversee a $35 billion portfolio and is directly responsible for managing its marquee mutual fund, the $12 billion Legg Mason Value Trust. He says his recent travails have been humbling.

"I have been through periods like this before," he says thoughtfully, during a lengthy interview at the Baltimore headquarters of Legg Mason Inc., the holding company for all the Legg Mason entities. "The difference is that we are a lot larger and more visible, and so there is a lot more client focus than there was then."

But, really, a period like this? After all, the federal government has just bailed out Wall Street, and the broader economy has been on tenterhooks for months as fears of a recession -- or worse -- loom on the horizon.

Woman Saves Man from Shark

At a remote beach in Australia, a fifty year old woman saved a thirty seven year old man who was mauled by a shark. As she heard his cries for help, she simply followed her instinct and jumped into the water to rescue him. Don’t you think she deserves an award for saving a stranger?

3G iPhone Preference Found in Beta 5 Firmware Rate

3G iPhone Preference Found in Beta 5 Firmware

Seems like I just posted about 3G iPhone. Actually, that’s because I did. It’s not my fault the internet is aflutter with iPhone love.

At any rate, this morning I was greeted by some interesting news regarding the 3G options found in the Beta 5 Firmware plist file. As you can see, the ability to turn 3G on or off is present — accompanied by the standard message about decreasing battery life for data speed.

From this random and very unverified blog post (via MacRumors):

Note that this is not fake, it is in the beta 5 .ipsw, but will normally not show up on an EDGE iPhone. Turning 3G on will just crash the phone if you use an EDGE phone. If you do not believe me, then decrypt the beta5 rootfs dmg, and see for yourself in /Applications/Preferences.app/Network.plist

So what does this mean, exactly?

It appears that the old Edge phones are going to run the same set of software as the new models when released. Unless there’s further implementation of features that expand upon the options for screen size, battery life optimization and other factors, it’s likely we may not see a drastic change in iPhone hardware in this next version.

If they both can run the same software and that software doesn’t account for a lot of differences, there might be some heavy depression in the camp of people that were expecting high end new features (like videocalls, believe it or not).

Nope, it’s starting to look like the device will simply be a bit lighter, look a bit different (for example, the all black cover rumors) and support 3G. This would be somewhat of a disappointment for me. I was hoping to see a fairly different phone. Now that I really give it some thought, that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

Apple has a winning model here, they need to tweak some things to broaden the market availability of the device. And... that’s about it. Other than 3G support, we don’t need to go too crazy with features that involve a lot more than simple software updates for this round.
